August has been fairly mild, as told by many of the locals. Don't get me wrong, we have had our share of humid and miserable days(probably way more than awesomely, nice ones)....but from what we hear, this isn't that bad. All be it for me to say....it's still DAMN hot!
The last few weekends we crossed off one of our "to-do list" projects with installing a backyard fence. It ended up being a project with just the two of us....so it actually took up about 2 1/2 of the last few weekends. We were lucky for the time that we decided to embark on this, because weather wise, we had some nice, cool days....so we didn't kill ourselves, except for all of the hard work we put in!! It was a fun project, no big turmoils or disagreements and plenty of power tools and getting your hands dirty! It's times like these, though, that we envision the family coming over and making it a big weekend job/gathering.....and really made us missing home. (Plus, missing the fact that had this been done in Nebraska, Dad could have just brought the tractor and auger over for us to dig the holes and not have to rent from Home Depot for a hand held one.....)
Here are some pictures of the process:
Posts in and set:
The stringers are up:
And.......drum roll please....(pttthhththththhththt.....me rolling my tongue and making the "drum roll").....
THE FINAL PROJECT!!!! (I can hear the ooo-ing and awe-ing now! )
Now it's ready for some backyard get togethers!!!
We managed to construct a fairly straight, pretty sturdy and eye-catching nook in our backyard that makes it feel just a little more like home. We learned a lot along the way about what works best and what to do when it comes to owning our own house and how to make it just right. There's something to be said about doing projects to your home and making things into your own. It definitely adds to the yearning of wanting to buy a house of our own....but gives us mixed emotions about getting to settled here and not knowing if when we could be moving next. So, for now, in many ways, this house is turning out to be our practice house! haha
What are your thoughts?!?! Any tips on what we could have done or should have done?!?! Anyone else remember a first big project as a married couple??!?!
Otherwise, nothing new to report. Work seems to be going well for the both of us and the summer seems to have passed rather quickly! We will be heading on a trip soon with Chad's parents to the Dominican Republic for a little anniversary celebration....they'll have made it 30 yrs this year...how blessed and amazing is that!?!? So, I would imagine that will be our next little update.....maybe we'll try and report on some words of wisdom we gained from the time we spent with them!!! Also, we're gearing up for the HUSKER season!!! (we hope to make it into New Orleans and find some fellow fans at a Husker bar this season!) Hope everyone enjoys the Husker kick-off and has a GREAT Labor Day weekend!!!
Unil next time-
